Juvenile Justice Commissioner, Santa Clara County


Commissioner Lissa Thiele currently serves on the Juvenile Justice Commission of Santa Clara County, CA. She has held the position since 2016. This state mandated Commission works on behalf of all justice engaged youth in the county. They ensure that institutions and community organizations follow and comply with regulations laid out in Title15. The Commission advocates for and protects the rights of its justice engaged youth.

Lissa is also the Adult Re-Entry Teacher/Administrator at A9CA (Challenge Accepted). This new school site serves and supports justice engaged adults who want to earn their high school diplomas. The goal of A9CA is to increase educational opportunities for moderate to high-risk offenders who are currently or formerly on probation/parole. A9CA also works with students who are under supervision but live in the community. Lissa created A9CA to immediately meet the needs of a unique student population. The school site provides opportunities for students to discover their full potential, develop their sense of purpose, and maximize independent learning, in productive, healthy ways.

Lissa Thiele was born in San Francisco, CA and went to the University of California at Santa Cruz. She received her master’s degree in History at San Francisco State University. Lissa is a fierce advocate for ending the school-to-prison pipeline, restorative justice, strong girls, strong women, honoring intersectionality and ending juvenile life without parole sentences. Lissa was recently honored by the California Department of Education for her original curriculum in civic engagement in sociology and the juvenile justice system. Through her “Respect Labs” she has created social emotional learning exploration for high-risk girls and women to ensure healthy life skills for positive outcomes. Lissa has presented her work at the National Conference for Social Studies in Austin Texas 2019 and the NCSS 100th centennial Conference, Washington D.C. 2020. Lissa lives with her husband and son in San Jose California.
