Assistant County Attorney, Story County Attorney’s Office
Kristen Formanek graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law with distinction in 2009 and moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. She began her career as an Assistant District Attorney handling a docket of 150-300 misdemeanor cases per day, ranging from driving while intoxicated cases (DWI) to domestic violence, sexual battery, and assault. Ms. Formanek quickly found her passion for crime victims and transitioned to a felony docket where she worked a high-volume caseload that included domestic assaults, burglary, and robbery cases. She believes that rehabilitation has a place in the criminal justice system and used this belief to help launch a pilot DWI treatment court program for high risk offenders with substance abuse issues. After its launch, she continued to lead both the DWI and drug treatment courts. In 2015, Ms. Formanek moved home to Iowa and took a position as an Assistant County Attorney in Story County, Iowa. In Story County, she has prosecuted indictable cases to include domestic assaults, sexual abuse, robbery, and attempted murder. She also works to create and maintain collaborative relationships between law enforcement and the County Attorney’s Office and assists with sex abuse investigations and trainings.
