Dr. Sujata Warrier

Dr. Sujata Warrier is committed to empowering others and transforming systems. She has been instrumental in improving how judges and immigration officers engage with underserved communities, particularly immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. A leader in judicial education on cultural responsiveness, Dr. Warrier teaches judges to confront their own biases to effectively address the needs of historically marginalized survivors.

As a mentor to rising leaders, Dr. Warrier has consistently raised the bar for those coming up in the field, encouraging them to take bold action. She is unintimidated by institutional barriers — even her name, “Warrier,” reflects her relentless pursuit of justice.

“Sujata fights for justice with the heart of a grassroots advocate. She is unapologetic in challenging systems to do better for survivors. She is my mentor and dear friend,” says Aparna Bhattacharyya, Executive Director of Raksha.

What truly distinguishes Dr. Warrier is her vision and ability to help others connect the dots between advocacy, policy, and practice. Among other missions, Dr. Warrier plays a key role in strengthening emergency management systems’ capacity to address the needs of domestic violence and sexual assault survivors during disasters and mass casualty events. With climate change and other crises increasing the frequency of disasters, this is a critical issue.

Dr. Warrier’s international work is just as impressive. From Bangladesh to Egypt to Russia and numerous countries in between, she has trained lawyers and advocates and helped shape policies worldwide. She is uniquely talented at taking complex issues and breaking them down in ways that resonate with everyone, from local advocates to international policymakers.

Using her humor, wit, and no-nonsense style to challenge systems, Dr. Sujata Warrier exemplifies what it means to be a Champion of Change. Her tireless fight for justice and equity is a living legacy for professionals and activists working to end gender-based violence.
