How can cooperation between law enforcement and the media lead to better outcomes? Detective Annie Harrison and reporter Gina Barton share lessons learned from a cold case that put away a serial sexual offender.
Their unlikely partnership began when Barton interviewed Harrison about the case, which became part of a USA TODAY project on the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) and was featured in the podcast Untested. Since 2015, SAKI has awarded nearly $350 million in grants to help jurisdictions tackle backlogged rape kits, yet delays, uneven reviews, and survivors left in the dark remain all too common.
How can investigators identify and avoid these pitfalls? Sharing excerpts from Untested, Harrison and Barton will provide some answers to this question – and show how working together has made them both better at their jobs.
