Lt. Misty Carausu
Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Dublin, CA

When Denise Huskins was released by the man who kidnapped and raped her in March 2015, the last thing on her mind was whether her experience sounded “believable.” But almost immediately, Huskins became the focus of a media firestorm and a law enforcement investigation intent on proving she staged the whole ordeal.

If it weren’t for the tenacity and investigative skills of Detective Misty Carausu, Huskins’ perpetrator would never have been brought to justice. Hear from the detective who “got it right” as she shares the investigative strategies she used and the lessons learned from this complex case featured in the Netflix series American Nightmare.
